Note that like most other games by The Software Toolworks, there's no way to configure the game's system settings after you install, meaning if you use a pre-installed package, you'll have no way to set the game's sound settings. So just set the third byte of CONFIG.DAT to a value of 4, and boom, the problem with the game's speech is fixed. A value of 1 will make the game use the PC speaker, but the value you actually want to have there is 4, which makes the game produce perfect digitized speech. The game's sound configuration is stored in byte 2 (the third byte, since they're numbered starting from 0) of the CONFIG.DAT file, and most copies of the game seem to have that byte set to a value of 2, which makes the game use AdLib sound, which sounds horrible when it tries to do speech synthesis.
